What is Multiple Sclerosis?
The description given by the Mayo Clinic states, "multiple sclerosis is a disease that causes breakdown of the protective covering of nerves.

Multiple sclerosis can cause numbness, weakness, trouble walking, vision changes and other symptoms. It's also known as MS.

In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, known as myelin. This interrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage of the nerve fibers." (www.mayoclinic.org)

Types of Multiple Sclerosis
MS is currently divided into 4 different types, or disease courses, as defined by the International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials of MS in 1996. They are:

-
Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)
-
Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS)
-
Secondary progressive MS (SPMS)
-
Primary progressive MS (PPMS)

Knowing the type of MS you have may help you know what to expect over the long term. It can also help you and your healthcare provider decide what type of disease-modifying therapy (DMT) might be best for you.
